Dear Members,

A Message from Your Captains
Members, with the welcome improvement in the weather, and competitions and club matches in full swing, the timesheet is now very busy. It’s more important than ever that the pace of play is maintained at target times to ensure everyone can enjoy their game.  Unfortunately, this hasn’t been the case on some recent Saturday sessions.  The target times for Killiney are “not more than 3hr 40 min for 3 balls” and “not more than 4 hrs for 4 balls”.    Therefore, we thought it helpful to issue a Pace of Play Guideline which we hope members embrace to make golf more enjoyable for all.

This Sunday also marks the start of a great week in the Killiney calendar with the commencement of the Sherry FitzGerald Mixed Invitational. We’d like to wish all members and guests a terrific week of golf, hospitality and friendship.

Lastly, we wish all our club teams the best of luck over the next few weeks, and hopefully we’ll continue the great performances of the early rounds.

Captains Gary and Lelia

COURSE UPDATE
New 7th Green and Teeing Areas
The 7th green, bunkers and teeing areas will reopen for play tomorrow Thursday 23rd May and are expected to remain in play until Sunday 2nd June. They will then close for some maintenance which is expected to last 3 to 7 days.   It would be very much appreciated if people can make an extra effort to repair  pitchmarks on the green and to sand any divots on the teeing areas. Please note there is some recent animal damage in certain areas on the new green and relief may be taken per rule 16.1d (Only applies to balls on the putting green).

Sand Bags
Reminder the carrying and use of sandbags is mandatory on the course at all times for all players.

Practice Ground
Please see attached the full rules for use of the practice area.  Chipping should only be done to the chipping green from inside the blue line. The target greens are only to be played to, from the designated teeing areas.

Care of the Practice Ground  (Linear Divot Pattern)
Please see below a picture from the practice ground  teeing area . Having done a little bit of research it appears the main problem seems to be what's known as lazy divot-taking.

The problem is most golfers don't know and have not been shown the recommended way to take divots on a driving range: in neat lines separated by bands of intact turf, as in this diagram from the USGA:

Here's the USGA's explanation:
A scattered divot pattern removes the most amount of turf because a full divot is removed with every swing. Scattering divots results in the most turf loss and uses up the largest area of a tee stall. This forces the golf facility to rotate tee stalls most frequently and often results in an inefficient use of the tee.

A concentrated divot pattern removes all turf in a given area. While this approach does not necessarily result in a full-sized divot removed with every swing, by creating a large void in the turf canopy there is little opportunity for timely turf recovery.

The linear divot pattern involves placing each shot directly behind the previous divot. In so doing, a linear pattern is created and only a small amount of turf is removed with each swing. This can usually be done for 15 to 20 shots before moving sideways to create a new line of divots. So long as a minimum of 4 inches of live turf is preserved between strips of divots, the turf will recover quickly. Because this divot pattern removes the least amount of turf and promotes quick recovery, it is the preferred method.
