Wine Appreciation Evening - Thursday 23rd March 2023
Members who were lucky enough to secure the much sought after tickets for the wine appreciation evening, were treated to a Spanish spectacle of wines and tapas befitting royalty.

You sensed something magical was in the air the moment you stepped into the dining room and viewed the linen tables, adorned with glittering crystal glasses set against the glow of soft candlelight.
The selected wines were from the Marques de Riscal vineyard and very kindly sponsored by Findlaters, whose representative Áine was on hand to capture the burgeoning orders for cases of both red and white! The accompanying tapas menu was chosen by Helen Stephenson, whose expert hospitality credentials were evident with every course.
Our sommelier Ruth began proceedings by introducing the assembled members to a 2002 organic Sauvignon Blanc, replete with olives and smoked salted almonds.
The decibel level rose a notch, with members exchanging excited glances, while those accustomed to these tastings were busy writing notes on colour, texture, and aromas.
Ruth was now into her stride, introducing two more whites, both a Verdejo grape variety; a Verdejo 2022 from the Rueda region matched with deep fried calamari and a 2017 Baron de Chirel from the Tierra de Castilla region paired with a delicious side of prawn pil pil.
By now members’ pronunciation of words and elocution were noticeably challenged, with members ‘toasting’ Johnny Sexton, Marty Morrissey, and ‘Mna na hÉireann’!!
In keeping with the tradition of the wedding at Cana, Ruth left the best till last, and turned her attention to the two Reds on offer.
The Marques de Riscal Reserva 2018 was first up, which is the Company’s flagship wine and satisfied the most discerning palate. Tasting notes on red wines are for ‘honours students’ and those members who felt at home in this exalted group were heard describing the experience as tasting of liquorice, cinnamon, and black pepper!! Praise the Lord!

The dining room fell silent, as Ruth introduced the last and most coveted wine of the evening, holding up a bottle displaying the label ‘XR Reserva’. We were way beyond ‘Blue Nun’ now, and this finale was akin to the Oscars. The oohs and aahs rippled through the room as expectation levels reached fever pitch, with glasses being offered in both hands, much to the glee of all-in attendance. The ‘XR’, far from being X rated, stood for ‘Xtra Rouge’!
By this stage, some members had lapsed into a catatonic state of happiness, while others recited Latin.
The evening lived up to its magical promise, with the wines receiving five-star accolades from all corners of the room. While the wine and tapas took pride of place, the real ‘showstoppers’ were the ever-reliable Killiney staff, who ensured every aspect of service was delivered with understated professionalism. An observant eye couldn’t fail to notice how Jon and his team worked the room with such panache.
While Helen Stephenson may have had a say in the menu’s creation, it was chef Alan and his team who stole the show, delivering a gastronomic ‘tour de force’, and cementing yet again Killiney’s enviable reputation for its superb food.

The clamour for another such evening was ringing loud at the social committee’s table, so it’s only fair that we should give Áine from Findlaters fair warning – we know where you live, and we have your number!
