KILLINEY GOLF CLUB
{{date}}

Dear {{firstname}},

What a winning week we had in the last week!  Congratulations to our Ladies who are the 2023 The Boyne Trophy Winners and to Gerry Drum & Dorothy Power who won the Killiney Mixed Invitation Matchplay Competition last Friday.

Killiney Golf Club’s Ladies had a fantastic win on Monday August 28th 2023 to take the Boyne Trophy in Edenderry Golf Club.

The Boyne Trophy Competition is a Ladies competition run by Edenderry Golf Club since 1994 with an initial field of 64 Leinster clubs. Teams consist of 5 pairs of ladies who compete under fourball match play rules over 6 rounds. Initial matches are home and away with the semi-final and final matches played in Edenderry.

The Killiney team, charismatically managed by Carolyn McGovern and assisted by Vice-Captain Lelia Jennings, played Sutton, Edmondstown, Howth, Greystones and Faithlegg on their way to the final where they met last year’s winners Rathdowney to comfortably win the final (4.5-0.5).

While 10 players played in the final, a total of 23 players and subs  were involved in the matches, and huge credit to all the players for their dedication to this team. Huge thanks also to the support from Killiney on this journey.  It has been 39 years since Killiney won a Ladies pennant and we are delighted to accomplish this in President Brenda’s year who has been such an inspiration to the Ladies of KGC over the years.

Killiney Mixed Invitation Matchplay Competition Week
We would like to offer our sincere thanks to member Michael Grehan & Sherry FitzGerald for their sponsorship of this fantastic week of Golf & Fun. The week would not have been the success it was without their valuable support.  We were delighted to have a Killiney win with Gerry Drum & Dorothy Power beating Old Conna in the final.

Course Information
Work is planned to commence in September on the upgrading of the 7th/16th holes and 8th/17th tees in accordance with the Course Plan. An image of the course before and after this major project is shown below.  It is proposed that we will be playing 8/16-hole competitions during the course of the works. An option to play the 14th hole and 5th holes a second time as replacements for the 7th/16th was considered but not adopted due to safety concerns, Golf Ireland competition regulations, and course flow management concerns.  The 8th/17th holes will also be slightly reduced in length to facilitate the work. Last year’s winter tees will be in play from mid-September.  The planned duration of the work is 8 weeks.  the re-opening of these holes is dependent on weather and growth conditions, but it is anticipated that by starting the work earlier than planned the holes should be playable in time for the 2024 handicap counting season.

Course Condition
It is disappointing to note that many golfers are currently not giving due attention to care of our course. There are many instances of :-

·         Bunkers not being raked or badly raked;

·         Pitch marks on greens not being repaired or repaired incorrectly;

·         Divot bags not being carried, and divot marks not being repaired on fairways;

·         Divot marks on tees (and in particular men’s par 3’s) not being repaired.

There are excellent short videos (2 minutes each) on the Dun Laoghaire Golf Club website (see attached link) https://www.dunlaoghairegolfclub.ie/The_Course/Virtual_Tour_(1)  Tab Course – Course Care Videos.

They demonstrate how to:

·         Repair divot marks;

·         Repair pitch marks;

·         Rake bunkers correctly.

On these issues, the condition of the course is very much in YOUR hands and those of your visitors.

Mini Super Tuesday Invitation

It was a great Mini Super Tuesday this week and fine weather. Unfortunately the winners Don McManus and his guest Paul Garvey (Howth) with an impressive 25 points could not make the prize giving, but the runners up were Captain John Waldron and his guest David Marsh (Woodbrook) with 23 points, pictured below with the sponsor Jason Ballard of Premier Parking.
