Ladies Intermediate cup: Killiney vs Dun Laoghaire on Friday 18th June
handicap index 15 and higher – all matches played off scratch
Friday promised to be a stunning day and the forecast lived up to its expectations, we were blessed with sunshine and a gentle breeze.
In Dun Laoghaire ( upper and lower )
The Killiney team of Lady Captain Diane Browne and Tina Airey teed off on the upper. Although a sunny day, the wind was very fresh. Both our players got off to a great start . Tina took the lead early and on the 4 she crystallised this with an awesome birdie . On the turn Diane’s proved fearsome but Tina was well up. Tina started the turn 5 up and continued with an amazing round of golf. One can never be complacent in golf as we all know. The golf gods favoured Dun Laoghaire for a few holes – and opposition was able to claw back a few holes. Suspense is building.
Meanwhile in Killiney Manager Anne Kilty and her team - Mieke McNamara, Orla Fitzgerald and Anne Dawson – teed off full of confidence. These girls are fab and I had knew they would do the business. They did in style! Mieke fought hard against a junior and held out as long possible until youth won out. Orla battled her way through her match against a her good friend, Mary. They stepped onto the first tee declaring, friends or not, they both meant business. Orla sealed the deal on the 18th when she holed a tricky slider for Par. In the meantime Anne was on fire and by the 14th hole she had the match in the bag. Superb golf!
Now with 2 wins at home and a loss in both venues all focus was on Tina’s match. Tina stepped onto the 17th tee box, one up. Nail biting stuff! Tina held her nerve to sink a 4 ft putt for the win - truly this golf should have been on pay to view . Well done to our girls in Dun Laoghaire. - super golf from Tina Airey .
A great day of golf. All matches were played in great spirit. The Dun Laoghaire Team Manager Nicky was a dream to deal with and the players a pleasure to compete against.
Killiney is lucky to have great golfers who are keen to represent their club. Fab team.
